Canvas is designed to give merchants a broader view of their online store.

Instead of looking at individual pages in isolation, merchants can see multiple templates together, move around the workspace, zoom into specific areas, and make changes in context.

Sidekick can also be used to make theme changes through natural-language instructions. Shopify says Sidekick can work directly with theme files, validate its code, and review screenshots of its work before returning the result.

This creates a more visual and collaborative approach to Shopify store development.

One of the most interesting parts of Canvas is the role of AI.

Rather than simply generating text or answering questions, Sidekick can help make actual changes to a store’s theme.

For example, a merchant could describe a design direction, request changes to a section, or ask for broader updates across the store. The result can then be reviewed visually and refined.

This reduces some of the friction between having an idea and seeing that idea implemented.

However, AI doesn’t automatically make every design decision a good one.
